  James B. Smith was a Civil War veteran. His biography was published in A History of Southern Illinois, by George Washington Smith, Chicago: Lewis, 1912, page 1707. Gen. Smith was well-known over Illinois on account that he was adjutant general under Gov. Yates, and later warden of the Chester penitentiary under Gov. Deneen.
