    • Entered active service as a draftee on April 26, 1944 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Completed basic training and qualified in the military occupational specialty of Heavy Truck Driver (931). Departed the Continental U.S. on December 10, 1944 bound for the European Theater of Operations. Assigned to and served with the 30th Detachment, Headquarters Special Troops, 2nd Army, in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. Earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 bronze battle stars, and the WWII Victory Medal. Honorably discharged as a Private First Class on December 3, 1945 at the Separation Center, Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky.

    On Veterans' Day, 2005, the city of Flora, Illinois dedicated a memorial to all known Clay County, Illinois World War II Veterans.

    Located on the south side of the city library, this is a copy of the brochure honoring that event.

    • James M. (Buck) Hunley, 70, Vero Beach, Fla, and formerly of Olney, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Indian River Memorial Hospital

      Mr. Hunley was born Dec. 13, 1914, in Clay County, the son of James G. and Edna (Patridge) Hunley.

      He married Josephine Carroll in 1948 and she survives.

      He was self-employed and was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney. He was a member of the Elks; VFW in Olney; American Legion in Olney; Vero Beach Shrine Club; Lions Club of Vero Beach; Amara Temple in Palm Beach, Fla.; A.F. & A.M. No. 448; Petroleum Club of Olney; and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites Valley of Southern Illinois.

      Survivors include two sons, Tom Fite III, Birmingham, Ala.; J. Michael Hunley, Vero Beach; a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Marianne) Ridgely, Parkersburg; four brothers; a sister; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
